Que Shan, Henan: Small Wheel Rims "Spin" Their Way into a Big Market

2023-05-18

On May 15, stepping into the laboratory at the industrial zone of HJZD Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Queshan County, Zhumadian City, Henan Province (hereinafter referred to as “HJZD Machinery”), technicians were conducting tests on a new automotive brake drum product. “According to the national standard, the drum crack test requires 150 cycles, but our product has already withstood 700 cycles,” said Gao Chao, Assistant General Manager of HJZD Machinery in Queshan County.

HJZD Machinery is a specialized, sophisticated, and innovative enterprise deeply engaged in the automotive parts industry. From the very beginning of its product positioning strategy, Que Shan County guided the company to focus on the niche segment of commercial vehicles and pursue a path of specialization, refinement, and innovation. Over the past decade and more, HJZD Machinery has zeroed in on the small yet critical area of wheel rims. With the precise, tailored support provided by Que Shan County, this seemingly modest component has grown into a substantial market. Currently, HJZD Machinery provides comprehensive supply to China’s top five automobile manufacturers and exports its products in bulk to Europe and the United States.

For heavy-duty vehicles, the friction generated during braking—and the resulting high temperatures of five to six hundred degrees Celsius—have traditionally led to short lifespans and frequent cracking of brake drums. Through innovation, the company has equipped brake drums with a “diamond-like protective coating.” Thanks to the introduction of new materials and the company’s proprietary “secret formula” that enables perfect fusion between different materials, components such as brake drums now boast extended service lives, reduced weight, and resistance to cracking. The company’s bimetallic composite brake drums have quickly gained popularity in the market, proving to be a resounding success.

“The steel-composite brake drums we produce are manufactured using fully automated, streamlined, and intelligent equipment—equipment and processes that represent a domestic first and are at an internationally advanced level. In terms of both production and sales scale as well as technological expertise, we significantly outperform our domestic competitors and have reached an internationally leading standard. These drums boast three major advantages: they’re virtually indestructible (never crack), lightweight (20%–30% lighter than conventional products), and have an exceptionally long service life (twice that of traditional products). As a result, our products are safer, better aligned with the trend toward lightweighting heavy-duty trucks, and more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly,” said Zhou Ligang, Chairman of HJZD Machinery, with great confidence.

However, as the automotive industry undergoes rapid upgrades and transformations, and commercial vehicles are moving toward greater variety and miniaturization, companies’ products urgently need to shift gears and upgrade themselves, keeping pace with market trends, continuously updating and iterating, and building modern manufacturing brands.

“For example, issues such as cost control, energy conservation and carbon reduction, and improving product precision—unless these problems are addressed, we’ll truly find ourselves ‘boxed in.’ To avoid being boxed in, companies must continue to step up R&D investment, promote green factory initiatives and smart transformations, and build an intelligent information platform,” said Zhu Shuangwen, Manager of the Comprehensive Department at HJZD Machinery, also highlighting some of the challenges faced by the company’s development.

Gong Xiqing, Deputy Director of the Development Zone in Queshan County, said: “After our special task force for ‘Ten Thousand People Assisting Ten Thousand Enterprises’ in Queshan County learned that a company was eager to build a ‘5G Smart Workshop’ but faced a significant funding gap—and that its technological upgrades and R&D could not be delayed—the team proactively stepped in to provide much-needed assistance. The company’s urgent needs and concerns have become the very focus of our innovative work.” Through tripartite cooperation among government, banks, and enterprises, the company HJZD Machinery secured both a technology loan and a working capital loan, enabling the smooth completion of its ‘5G Smart Workshop.’ With the support of intelligent technologies, the company can now upgrade and transform without worry.

“With no lingering worries holding us back, our company’s products are undergoing a smooth transition and upgrading, enhancing our market competitiveness and allowing us to operate with greater agility. Customers like China FAW and Second Automobile are among our clients, and our products are now being exported in large quantities to Europe and the United States. From a market perspective, our products have truly ‘broken out of the circle’ now. As we continue to invest in our Phase II project, we’ll achieve a fourfold increase in sales revenue, reaching our strategic goal of 2 billion yuan,” said Zhou Ligang, Chairman of HJZD Machinery, with firm conviction.

In recent years, Queshan County has been coordinating efforts to upgrade traditional industries and foster emerging ones, placing greater emphasis on the strategic layout and development of key industries. It has strengthened technological upgrades, enterprise collaborations, and market expansion, thereby establishing a high-ground for industrial development. Centered around HJZD Machinery, the county is building an automotive equipment manufacturing industrial park, precisely attracting investment and ensuring robust upstream and downstream supporting industries. The government’s strong service capabilities have translated into enhanced productivity for enterprises. As a result, HJZD Machinery has successively launched a series of composite brake discs and aluminum alloy wheel products, which have won acclaim from customers both at home and abroad.

“Our county of Que Shan is focusing primarily on equipment manufacturing, accelerating the construction of projects such as the HJZD Machinery Industrial Park, Zhongpeng Automotive Components, and Langkai Axle Bridges. We are cultivating a group of ‘specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative’ enterprises at both the national and provincial levels, thereby enhancing the innovation capacity and specialization level of our manufacturing sector. We are also actively supporting projects in the electronics and electrical appliance industries as well as violin manufacturing, guiding the development of industrial clusters, expanding the overall scale of manufacturing, and fostering the growth of modern manufacturing,” said Lu Geng, Secretary of the Que Shan County Party Committee.
